We’ve covered the “plumbing” of the LAN, the “Mission-First” software suite on the Dell, and the technical partnership with Mark in Texas. But as any ham knows, the gear is just the medium. The message is what matters.
The ROTA (Recliners on the Air) philosophy isn’t about the easiest way to operate; it’s about the most present way to operate. It is the intersection of a technical obsession and a committed life.
The Recliner as a Tactical Position
In the world of emergency communications (EMCOMM), we often talk about “deploying” to a field site or a command post. But for the caregiver, the most important tactical position is the one that keeps you within earshot of your family.
By moving the “shack” into the living room, the recliner becomes the cockpit. It allows for “Parallel Play”—that unique state where I can monitor a JS8Call heartbeat or a Winlink Wednesday check-in while remaining fully available for a conversation with Sue or the grandkids. It turns a “solo” hobby into a shared environment.
Stealth EMCOMM: The Quiet Watch
Being a Communications Leader for my neighborhood CERT team or a partner in the Community Disaster Messengers (CDM) project doesn’t require being locked away in a shed. Every digital “ping” and asynchronous message sent from the recliner is a deposit into a safety bank.
We practice the “FUNCOMM” today so that when the grid goes down, the transition to “EMCOMM” is muscle memory. The skills forged during the calm of a Tuesday afternoon in the recliner are the same skills that will move vital health and welfare traffic when a hurricane hits. We are ready for the storm, even while enjoying the quiet of the living room.
Closing the Loop
At the end of the day, after the $500 “upgrade tax” is paid and the Windows background updates are finally finished, the magic remains the same as it was when I first started at age 15. It’s the thrill of the “Long Skip”—sending a signal into the ionosphere and knowing that a trusted partner like Mark is there to catch it 1,000 miles away.
ROTA is my way of keeping the signal clear, both on the air and at home.

Coming in Season 2:
We trade the keyboard for the key. Can Morse code truly be a ‘parallel play’ mode? We’re going to find out. Stay tuned!
